Late Friday News.

Hello everyone! I have decided to add a new section to my blog, Late Friday News. I will try to post two pieces of sustainable news that will hopefully give you some hope every Friday. These could be breaking news or just little snippets of information that you might not have heard of yet. Let’s begin.

The Kunming Declaration

This Wednesday, representatives from over 100 countries came together and met in China. There, they committed to the Kunming Declaration, which calls countries to take action on biodiversity protection. This declaration will be an impactful start to the Cop-15 plan.

Biodiversity is a significant and severe problem that the Cop-15 plan hopes to start solving. I haven’t talked about biodiversity that much in my posts, but I will in the future. Biodiversity is about the variety of life around the world. The loss of biodiversity will impact a species’s survival and the entire ecosystem. Without particular species serving their role in their ecosystem, the ecosystem is in danger of collapsing. About one million species are at risk of going extinct.

Biodiversity loss has always been happening, but this time it is different. We are the cause of this. Human activities such as agriculture and pollution are causing natural habitats to decrease, losing biodiversity.

This declaration aims to spread awareness on biodiversity loss worldwide and let countries worldwide start to take action.

Coldplay’s Efforts to Reduce Environmental Impacts

Any fans of Coldplay out there? This piece of news is for you. Or for anyone out there who seems to have lost hope in protecting our environment.

Coldplay has been working with famous climate scientists to try and reduce their environmental impacts during their Music of the Sphere’s Tour. Their efforts include:

  • Cutting down their emissions by 50% (compared to their last tour).

  • Planting a tree for every ticket sold.

  • Encouraging their fans to use environmentally friendly means of transport.

Celebrities like them are constantly traveling around the world, touring and sharing their music with fans. But often, these tours significantly impact our environment, whether it is the emissions from their transport or the trash produced at their concerts. According to Futurism, five musicians on tour added 19,314 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in just six months. This static can be overwhelming, but imagine all the carbon emissions they could reduce if they just tried more environmentally friendly solutions.

That is what Coldplay and many other musicians are doing. By using their voice and “reputation,” they are spreading the word and doing their part to help the environment. I know that you can too :)

This is it for today. I hope that these two pieces of news gave you the tiniest bit of hope and courage to keep on taking action! Remember, what we do has a difference. Even if our efforts don’t go on the news, we should be proud to do what we can. Bye~
